We felt it was an obligation to preserve the ‘short horse’ conformation and pedigree of Surprise Pac when we bought her as an aged mare. She was breathtakingly beautiful and correct even in old age. She was bred by Tom Ford of Winifred, MT (50 year AQHA breeder). John Coffee Hayes is her last foal and a fitting end to her reproductive career.

John Coffee Hayes at 3 years of age After spending a year researching stallions we knew there were none better, to cross on Surprise Pac, than Leo Hancock Hayes. A son of the ‘Rodeo Legend’ Blue Valentine out of a granddaughter of Leo, a perfect choice for our granddaughter of Gold King Bailey AA (SI-85) whose dam was a granddaughter of Joe Reed II AA (World Champion Running Stallion). Leo Hancock Hayes is the sire of multi AQHA point earners, and was well known for his extraordinarily kind disposition.

Leo Hancock Hayes dam, Doll 01, was a daughter of Rip Rip (SI 65), who was sired by Leo and out of a daughter of Sugar Bars. Sugaree Bars was not just ANY daughter of Sugar Bars, she was the first AAA racehorse to also become an AQHA Champion, and her dam was Bud Warren’s 'Blue Hen' mare ~ Randle’s Lady. Randle’s Lady was the ONLY horse to ever beat the great Leo in a race.

Rip Rip’s dam Sugaree Bars is a maternal sister to the great mares Rosa Leo AAA and South Pacific (SI65), and the stallion Croton Oil AA, all of them full siblings by Leo and out of Randle’s Lady.

When Gold King Bailey AA was bred to the mare Rosa Leo AAA she produced King Leo Bailey AAA (a stakes winner & track record holder) and the mare Rosa Leo Bailey AAA.

When South Pacific was bred to Gold King Bailey she produced Gold Pacific AAA the sire of Pacific Bailey AAAT. There is no denying the nick of these Leo x Randle’s Lady’s daughters with Gold King Bailey was a winning one.

Another winning pedigree nick was Rosa Leo bred to Sugar Bars which produced the stallion Counterplay a AAAT stakes winner, AQHA Champion, Superior Race and Halter.

A great example of the Sugar Bars, Gold King Bailey and Joe Hancock cross is Bar Socks Babe an Equi-stat all-time leading producer. Together, Bar Socks Babe’s get have over $426,000 in NCHA earnings.

Rip Rip’s dam, Sugaree Bars, is also the dam of Pa Jones AAA the sire and grandsire of winning barrel horses and the mare Golly Moses AAA, who was a multiple AAA, stakes and ROM producing dam. Both Pa Jones and Golly Moses were sired by Jet Deck.

Don and John at 4 years of age Bud Warren, inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in 1989, knew how to cross his Leo’s and Sugar Bars’ and then his Jet Deck’s. Rip Rip came from this world class breeding program. He spent the majority of his breeding career siring ranch and rope horses, his daughters and sons, contributing to the success of Blue Valentine as a sire.

Additional speed blood comes from Blue Valentine’s sire Red Man AA, who was the sire of winners; Apache Agent AAA Stakes Winner, John Red AAA, Miss Print AA, Red Momma AA, Worryman AA, Cibecue Roan (AQHA Honor Roll rope horse) plus many more.

John's maternal grandsire Montana Bailey (sire of a race winner and an AQHA point earner) was out of a granddaughter of Bert (sire of race and arena ROM) and Hard Twist AAA a two time World Champion Quarter Running stallion.

Tom Ford’s Montana Bailey/Apache Reed cross has provided the foundation for a number of Canadian Quarter Horse breeding programs, producing many successful timed event horses and riding partners.

John's 3rd dam, Dia K Uno was 25% Golden Chief (Copperbottom) blood & represents the breeding programs of:

John Coffee Hayes spring 2014

A couple months before Vince Hayes (breeder of Leo Hancock Hayes) passed away, he phoned Don to talk about John Coffee Hayes and his sire, Leo Hancock Hayes, whom Vince loved dearly. He said John was as much like his sire as any of them (other sons of LHH) and not to let anyone tell us different. We couldn’t agree more. John may not have his sire's height (15.1 or 2) but there are times when I come around the corner of John’s pen and am stopped in my tracks, transfixed by the image of Leo Hancock Hayes from the few photographs of him as a younger horse, as I gaze upon my ‘John boy’, who we love dearly.
